NCAA Tournament is a possibility for Cyclone women’s basketball team

The opportunity for the Cyclone women’s basketball team to make the “Big Dance” is growing with each victory.

The anticipation mounts with upsets of Nebraska and highly-rated Texas in the past week.

“This is the biggest game that we’ve had in a long time. When was the last time a women’s team had a game this big. I can’t remember one,” said Tom Kroeschell, Iowa State Media Relations Director.

If obtained, the berth would be the first in Cyclone history.

Tonight, the Cyclones will look for their ninth conference victory of the season against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (14-10, 6-8) in James H. Hilton Coliseum.

The game will be the final home contest for five seniors: Tara Gunderson, Julie Hand, Alecia Lee, Kim Martin and Cheyenne Palmer.

The Cyclones currently have a 15-9 overall record while posting an 8-6 record in the Big 12 Conference.

With a minimum of three games left in the season, the Cyclones have clinched their second straight winning overall record.

The last time the Cyclones had back-to-back winning season was 1975-76 and 1976-77 under former Head Coach Lynn Wheeler. The records during those seasons were 20-8 and 19-11.

If the Big 12 tournament were to be played today, the Iowa State women would be embattled in a three-way tie with Nebraska and Kansas State.

The seeding would fall into a tie breaker situation because all three teams have split the conference series.

The Cyclones are looking to add to their record total attendance mark of 19,704. The old mark, set last year, was 17,060.

According to Iowa State Media Relations Director Tom Kroeschell, tickets will be free tonight for students showing their school i.d. cards.

Tipoff for tonight’s game will be at 7.
