Iowa State gymnasts tumble over Missouri
February 17, 1997
The Iowa State gymnastics team dominated the University of Missouri Friday night at Hilton Coliseum, defeating the Tigers 193.150-190.100. The victory evened the Cyclones’ record at 3-3 on the season.
With their most complete performance of the season, the Cyclones outperformed the Tigers in every event en route to their highest point total of the year.
“We finally put one together, they needed to do that for their mental state to move upward for the rest of the season. This was key timing, we needed a good home score for regionals,” said Head Coach Amy Pyle.
Senior Kim Mazza led the Cyclone charge as she captured first place in the all-around by breaking her previous school record with a performance of 39.175. Mazza earned top honors in the floor exercise (9.875), balance beam (9.775) and the uneven bars (9.80).
“I’m happy for her, she hadn’t really hit since the first meet and she was due. This was a well-deserving meet for Kim. She works very hard,” Pyle said.
Freshman Kelli More also competed in the all-around and compiled a score of 38.350 to take second-place honors.
The Cyclones opened with the vault and continued to dominate as they have all season by scoring the third highest total in school history (48.425).
Junior Amy Wall once again proved to be ISU’s top vaulter by claiming first place for the third consecutive meet. Wall equaled her personal best with a score of 9.825.
Junior Heidi Kirt came through with a solid effort contributing a 9.80 to tie for second place while Mazza scored a 9.725 for the Cyclones.
Moving to the uneven bars, the Cyclones scored their highest point total of the season (48.225).
Following Mazza’s lead, Wall and More each totaled a 9.70 to tie for second place.
“There were good scores for us on every event, but not near our potential quite yet. We’re getting close,” Pyle said.
The Cyclones continued to perform well as they went to the balance beam by totaling a 48.00.
Equaling Mazza’s score on the beam, More tied for first place with a 9.775. Sophomore Michelle Hladky performed a 9.650 for the Cyclone effort.
By totaling their highest score of the season on the floor exercise (48.50) the Cyclones wrapped up the victory against the Tigers.
Junior Libby Bell performed well with a 9.750 on the floor and junior Shannon Herzog contributed a 9.675.
“It helped knowing the competition wasn’t as strong as previous meets and that made it a little easier mentally. They can take away more confidence to prepare for Oklahoma,” Pyle said.
The Cyclones compete against Oklahoma on Feb. 21 at Hilton Coliseum. Competition begins at 7 p.m.
