Wrestlers stick it to Northern Iowa
February 24, 1997
The Iowa State wrestlers sure know how to make an exit.
At yesterday’s dual against Northern Iowa at Hilton Coliseum, the last regular-season meet for both teams, there was no contest. The Cyclones completely dominated the Panthers and strutted off with a 34-4 victory.
Cody Sanderson opened up the winning for ISU at 118 pounds with a sound trouncing of UNI’s John Zelinski.
Sanderson had his opponent on his back toward the end of the first period, but time ran out before he could secure the pin.
During the rest of the match, Sanderson kept on the offensive. He scored a reversal and exposed Zelinski’s back to the mat twice.
“I was trying to get the pin, but I couldn’t seem to get him down,” Sanderson said. He had to “settle” for match termination and five team points.
At 126 pounds, ISU’s Dwight Hinson, ranked second in the nation, had an easy time with Scott Murray.
He scored his 101st victory, 8-3, to up the team score to 8-0.
A major decision for Northern Iowa at 134 put the team’s only points on the board, 8-4.
David Maldonado turned things back around for the Cyclones at 142 pounds during his 7-2 pounding of Glenn Pero.
Chris Bono, ranked first in the nation at 150 pounds, ended his career at Hilton in style. His battle against UNI’s Chris Bahr ended with the Panther flat on his back at 3:39.
Bono said he wasn’t going into the match with a pin in mind, even though it worked out that way.
“I was just looking to go out and dominate,” Bono said.
“It was a good last match for me. … I wanted to go out there, I wanted to wrestle the whole match, just to improve on my shape.”
The pin put Iowa State up even more, 17-4.
At 158 pounds, John DeLeon of Iowa State decisioned Jason Haag, 5-2.
Bart Horton of ISU quickened a few pulses with his match against Dan Kjeldgaard at 167 pounds. After a takedown toward the end of the first period, Horton had his opponent almost on his back.
The Cyclone held Kjeldgaard for over 30 seconds as the Panther struggled up in the closing moment of the period, giving Horton only a three-point near-fall.
Horton still held on for the win despite the change in momentum, 6-5.
At 177 pounds, Barry Weldon, ranked first in the nation, systematically dismantled Ben Barton of UNI.
Weldon scored takedown after takedown, only allowing Barton three escape points in the whole match. Weldon pulled out the win, 13-3, boosting the team score to 27-4.
Matt Mulvihill kept up the pace at 190 pounds.
He fended off an attack by Tony Wieland in the first few seconds of the first period and then exploded for a swift takedown and three-point near-fall.
He nabbed another three points for introducing Wieland’s back to the mat in the tail end of the first.
Mulvihill kept Wieland from scoring a single point and ended the match with a crushing 12 points.
Trent Hynek put the icing on the victory cake with a decision at heavyweight.
Hynek was strong on top and rode Bret Jones for the entire second period, not even allowing a meager escape point.
There were many points scored during the third, with both wrestlers scoring two takedowns.
Hynek kept control, though, and came up with the 10-6 decision. The victory settled Iowa State’s victory at 34-4.
The Iowa State wrestlers are finished with their regular season, and they’re gearing up for the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., on March 8.
