Officially speaking

Editorial Board

English may be the most commonly spoken language in Iowa, but there is no need for it to be declared as the “official language.”

The debate came up when the Iowa Senate could not agree over whether driver license exams should be offered in languages other than English.

However, whatever the Senate decides, it is not necessary to establish English as an official language to mandate it.

English is the common language of the United States and the world.

Everywhere you go, English is seen or heard.

Signs in English are common sites at nearly every international airport in the world.

Foreign restaurants have menus in English.

English is the most learned second language in the world.

It is also commonly spoken in countries where English is not the official language.

Since English is a language already known worldwide, why is it necessary to make it official?

If the Iowa Senate wants to make a language “official,” it ought to do something really nice, and give another, less prominent language a chance.

Even if that means driver license exams will be administered in Spanish.
