Asking for a GSB miracle

The Government of the Student Body Constitutional Convention will meet again on Sunday, Jan. 26.

Convention participants will plan on working on a new constitution for next year’s student government.

An election committee has been chosen to plan a method for the constitution to be ratified. This plan consists of a student-body election in which at least 20 percent of the entire student body must show up at the polls. It will take at least 50 percent of those voters to pass.

In theory and in reality, it’s a good idea.

In theory, it’s an idea that could actually work.

But is getting 20 percent of the student body to come vote in the first place realistic for Iowa State?

Traditionally, the Iowa State student body has had a poor record when it comes to student government elections. Past elections have barely attracted 7 percent, let alone 20 percent of the student body.

If the convention is serious about creating a new constitution for its students, it must take into account reality. It must find a way to reach out to more students. This means it must conduct the constitutional election in a manner different from other GSB elections, such as having two election days.

Students are equally, if not more so at fault for not getting involved in the affairs of the Government of the Student Body.

The constitution is an important part of the GSB. It is essentially its guide for how to operate. If all students don’t participate in the democratic process of this university by stating the approval of their government constitution, then who will?
