Pratt is innocent
January 14, 1997
I have sat around and listened to the public and press bad mouth Kenny Pratt for the entire Christmas break and, after the Monday edition of the Daily, I felt compelled to write my own letter.
As it so plainly says in the “In Our Opinion” column, the accusations and the observations you have written about Kenny Pratt are from your “meager outside perspective.” The simple fact is that we, as the public do not know the entire story nor will we ever unless we were there to witness the entire scene.
As a U.S. citizen who believes in our judicial system, I find it especially disturbing that we are so quick to give anyone who is accused of anything a guilty sentence and public distrust. Last time I looked, everyone in this country is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
It seems, however, that the media has a different constitution as is proven time and time again with the instances such as Irving and Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, the security guard at the Atlanta Olympics, and Kenny Pratt.
What we fail to realize is that although Kenny Pratt is a public figure here at Iowa State, he is also a citizen with rights like any other citizen.
As of now, the courts have not found Kenny Pratt guilty of anything in this instance. This means, to all of you who have been having trouble understanding, that Kenny Pratt is innocent.
