Rename it already

Just rename it. Since the 1980s Iowa State students, faculty, staff and alumni have rallied in support of honoring an ISU alumus and football great by changing the name of Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field to Jack Trice Stadium.

Now, after years of suggestions, the time has come for Iowa State to officially decide once and for all whether it supports changing the stadium name.

Because all name changes of campus buildings must be approved by the state Board of Regents, the final decision now rests on a recommendation by ISU President Martin Jischke.

On Tuesday, the chairwoman of a committee that evaluates the names of buildings and streets on campus said the committee would be giving its recommendation about the name change to Jischke sometime this week. Jischke will then make his recommendation to the regents.

Jischke could make his recommendation to the regents as early as the February meeting or wait until March. He could also decide not to act at all, effectively killing the drive.

Because Government of the Student Body senators unanimously voted in support of the name change, and because several public forums have been held about the name at which those in attendance largely supported the idea, and because students have been requesting it for years — how about we do it?

There should be no need for further recommendations or discussion.

President Jischke: You know what the students want.

You know the students largely support a new name. Please take that into account. Please be fair. Please support a new name.
