Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell, of Iowa’s third district which includes Ames, voted yesterday to reprimand House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., which follows the recommendation of the House ethics committee.
“The speaker broke the rules and should be punished,” Boswell said in a prepared statement. “We all must live under the same rules and no one should be above them, not even the speaker.”
The ethics committee recommeded by 7-1 vote to reprimand the speaker for ethical misconduct which included a $300,000 penalty for Gingrich.
“This is an unprecedented move in the House and is a very serious matter to which I have given much thought,” Boswell stated. “What I am more concerned about, however, is that we get down to the business we have all been sent here to accomplish.”
