Another day off for some

Some Iowa State students got Friday off, too.

Kildee Hall, under construction because of a planned addition, was left powerless when a 4,000-volt line was accidentally cut at 10:45 a.m. Friday.

No one was injured or endangered when a contractor inadvertently sliced the high-voltage power cable.

Jeff Witt, chief engineer at the facilities plant, said the cable was damaged with a backhoe. Witt said the cable was repaired and the power was restored by 3 p.m. Friday.

The heat in the building was still working, but because the electricity was off, no fans could be run to circulate heat throughout the rooms.

As a result, many classes were relocated to other buildings and some were canceled.

Wayne Osborn, assistant professor of history, said his class democratically voted to call it a day after students gathered information they needed for an upcoming assignment.

“I couldn’t see. The lights went off and we left,” Osborn said. “It wasn’t all that exciting.”

Erin Bresnan, a junior in Spanish, said it was dark when she entered the building and the emergency lights gave the halls an “eerie glow.”

She said she had class with Osborn for about 15 minutes.

“It was a new excuse to get out of class,” Bresnan said.

Classes in Kildee Hall will resume as scheduled today.
