Give ’em all you got

Now with the WNBA, there are two professional women’s basketball leagues.
With the American Basketball League already in operation (Columbus leads the league, but has the lowest attendance) and the recent draft in preparation for the Women’s National Basketball Association’s first season, there are two pro women’s roundball leagues. All this interest in women’s basketball is unprecedented in the history of sport.
This is a good thing.
How many Iowa State women’s basketball games have you attended lately? How many have you attended ever? Is it a big, fat, round zero? Well, you don’t know what you’ve been missing.
Women’s basketball has what much of the men’s game, especially the NBA, is lacking. The women’s game reminds the audience of what pure basketball once was. Today, in the NBA mainly, nobody plays defense.
Many players can be self-centered and referees seem to have forgotten what traveling is.
To win in the ABL, which is in its first year, players must play as a team. In the NBA, it seems as if most teams are one- or two-man circus shows.
Women’s basketball is closer to what Dr. James Naismith had in mind when he invented the game.
The name for the ABL is non-sexist and somewhat better than WNBA.
The WNBA was launched by the NBA and there is power behind the name.
If they must use the title WNBA, they should use MNBA for the men’s league.
So get out there go see a women’s basketball game and watch how basketball should be played.
