ISU gymnastics team escapes Illinois State

The Iowa State gymnastics team edged out Illinois State, 190.675 – 190.450, in a Jan. 26 dual meet in Normal, Ill.

The Cyclones improved their record to 2-1 with the victory.

The vault once again proved to be the Cyclones strongest event, as they recorded the fifth highest vault score in school history (48.125).

Junior Heidi Kirt led the way vaulting a team high 9.725, followed by freshman Kelly Cherwein (9.675) and junior Amy Wall (9.625).

Senior Kim Mazza finished second in the all-around with a score of 38.30.

Mazza recorded a meet high 9.775 on the uneven bars, a 9.70 on the floor exercise and a 9.60 on the vault.

Mazza also chipped in with a 9.225 on the balance beam.

The Cyclones continued to show improvement, increasing their floor exercise score .275 from their first meet, recording a 47.90 against Illinois State.

Freshman Kelli Moore led the way contributing a 9.70 on the floor along with juniors Libby Bell (9.525) and Shannon Herzog (9.50).

Herzog was also ISU’s top performer on the balance beam, winning the event with a score of 9.80.

Junior Kayo Merritt recorded a 9.625 on the beam while sophomore Michelle Hladky totaled a 9.650.

The Cyclones captured the top three places on the uneven bars with Hladky contributing a 9.70, earning her a second place finish behind teammate Mazza (9.775).

Wall finished third with a score of 9.675.

The Cyclone gymnasts compete next at Denver on Feb. 11 before returning home to play host to Minnesota Feb. 8.
