Committee looks for future FCS dean
January 14, 1997
Applications for the dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences are now being accepted by an appointed search committee.
Nancy Eaton, dean of library services, will chair the search committee and said she expects to receive several applications for the position.
The committee of 13 people includes faculty members, students, alumni and people from the business community.
The committee plans to begin reviewing all of the applications on Feb. 5. Interviews are scheduled for the spring and the committee hopes to make a selection by the next academic year.
“We consider this to be a very good position,” Eaton said. “This college is recognized nationally. I expect to get a good pool [of applicants].”
Beverly Crabtree, current dean of the college, will step down on June 30, but will remain on the faculty through the 1997-98 academic year.
Crabtree has held the position for 10 years and said she will miss the interactions with the students, faculty, alumni and staff of the college.
“I’m looking for a new dean coming on board and taking our college to a new degree of excellence,” she said. “I would hope the new person would be a strong advocate for this college and university and will recognize the importance of this college to the university and society.”
Crabtree said she is most proud of seeing the accomplishments of the students in the FCS college, as well as recruiting and obtaining outstanding faculty.
The college is also in the process of building the Palmer Human Development and Family Studies building. They were able to raise $5.1 million from alumni and friends of the college to help fund the new addition.
Crabtree said she has accomplished what she sent out to accomplish 10 years ago —the faculty has increased and external funding for the college has increased to nearly $9 million a year, from $600,000 when she started.
The diversity of the college has also changed, she said. There are more male and more minority students than there were in the past. They are also recruiting more faculty and students than ever before.
The position of dean for the College of Family and Consumer Sciences involves providing academic leadership to the entire college, she said. The new dean will also act as the administrator for all departments in the college.
Eaton said they are looking for a “national leader in this discipline” to fill the vacancy.
“We’re looking for somebody who can work well with the faculty in the college and other administrators on campus,” Eaton said. “We need somebody who can think far enough out, to envision what the college needs in the future.”
The search committee will do the initial screening of the applicants. They will also help the provost’s office conduct interviews, as well as provide the provost with insights to each candidate.
Nominations and applications should be sent to Nancy Eaton, chair, CFCS Dean Search Committee, Office of the Provost, 107 Beardshear, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50021. Copies of the position description can be obtained from Eaton.
All nominations and applications should be submitted by Feb. 1.
