Summer storage is needed

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

This is the theme behind the current debate in the residence halls where Randy Alexander, director of residence, is looking into possibly eliminating access to summer storage because of student liability problems.

However, this is not in the best interest of students who depend upon summer storage in which to keep furniture, bookshelves, winter clothes, carpet and other hefty items while they are at home during break.

Students have been using summer storage for a long time and so far it hasn’t created any major problems. If anything, it is a convenient university service and a luxury for students who come here from out-of-state. The Department of Residence provides this service especially so students can avoid carrying heavy items back and forth between school and home each year.

“We’re used to it,” said Ryan Dea, a house president in Larch Hall. “The current system is working for us.”

When it comes to issues of liability, Alexander is concerned with the carrying of heavy items from the top floors of residence halls because they are too big to be in an elevator. He said situations like this may cause liability problems.

However, there is no guarantee of problems. Also, moving heavy items up and down stairs is nothing new. Residents have always done this.

Alexander should consider how much students depend upon summer storage the next time he meets with the Inter-Residence Hall Association.

So far this year, he has shown his concern for students by demanding soap in certain residence halls and offering housing for Theta Chi fraternity members, among other things.

Those were situations that needed immediate action for good reasons.

But when it comes to summer storage, Alexander should see if there is a more concrete reason for eliminating access to summer storage. If this university service is such a convenience to students, liability shouldn’t be a major concern.

Alexander should always keep in mind the best interest of students, and right now that is to keep their access to summer storage.
