Nwampka, Radske shine at ISU Open

Iowa State senior sprinter Franklin Nwampka highlighted the Cyclones’ first effort of the year at the ISU Open track meet on Saturday in the Lied-Recreation-Athletic Facility.
Nwampka automatically qualified for the NCAA indoor championship, winning the 60-meter dash with an ISU record time of 6.62.
“He had already qualified in December, but this was a school record time that is also one of the fastest times in the nation. He just accelerated and went right on through,” said ISU Men’s Head Track Coach Steve Lynn.
Nwampka, who battled through a foot operation and a hamstring injury that nearly redshirted him this season, is now running in top form.
“We had thought about redshirting him, but he made his way back. He is now running the way he was before the injuries,” Lynn said.
Other top finishers for the Cyclones were sophomore long-jumper Yago-Lamela Tobio, who claimed first place honors in the long jump with a leap of 24-11.
“Yago got some good jumps in.
“I really think as the year goes by you’ll see some big jumps out of him,” Lynn said.
ISU distance runner Cory Ihmels also came in first place in the mile run with a time of 4:13.3.
“Cory ran very well, but he just treated this meet as a workout. So it was a good workout for him,” Lynn said.
Damon Lampley also captured the high jump crown for the Cyclone men with a jump of 6-11.
“He’s doing well. He cleared 6-11 easily, and I really feel as though he is ready to start jumping in that 7-1, 7-2 area,” Lynn said.
Cyclone weight man Tim Wilson also grabbed a gold medal in the weight throw with a toss of 56-6 1/2.
For the Cyclone women, Trina Radske had a stellar outing in the long jump.
Radske turned in a provisional qualifying leap of 20-5.
Radske also finished in second place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63.
Kris Curnyn took home double honors by winning the shotput with a toss of 48-4 3/4, and the weight throw, with a toss of 57-7. Cyclones Emily Flom and Karelle Seuferer followed teammate Curnyn with second and third place tosses in the shot put at 43-8 1/2 and 43-5 1/4.
Kim Iverson also captured the 800-meters crown with a time of 2:18.47.
