Parking fines will be the same next year

It did not take the Transportation Advisory Council long to decide that parking fines will remain the same for the 1998 fiscal year.

At Thursday’s meeting, there was no discussion on the decision to recommend that parking fees remain the same.

It passed with a 9-0 vote.

The recommendation was conceptualized at last Thursday’s TAC meeting. After discussion last week and at two subcommittee meetings, the council agreed to leave fees the same.

No mention was made of Connie Cole’s suggested and withdrawn proposal to f raise parking fines for 1998, but Doug Houghton, of the Department of Public Safety, discussed capital projects, stating that the proposed parking lot at Administrative Services would run $100,000 more than anticipated.

He said that due to this fact, the project may no longer be completed.

The council is now considering the formation of a campus-wide committee to investigate transportation needs, which will be headed by council member James Hutter.

Issues to be discussed were noted by Houghton, who said specific issues included design of turn-around parking spots and a persistent violators policy.

“We don’t have a method of dealing with someone who has 38 tickets,” Houghton said.

These matters should be further discussed at future council meetings. The council hopes to resolve these issues before the close of the semester.
