The Iowa State swim teams fell in weekend action to the high-powered Nebraska Cornhuskers in Ames on Saturday.

The Huskers men posted 133.5-101.5 and the Husker women won by the score of 156.5-81.5 over the Cyclones.

Johan Andersson paced the Cyclone men’s team with a pair of victories. Andersson claimed the top spots in the 200 individual medal (1:53.67) and the 100 meter breaststroke(51.78). Also winning for the Cyclones was Jay Schindler in the 100 meter breaststroke. The Big 12 leader in event claimed the top prize with his time of 57.30 seconds.

Iowa State Men’s Head Coach Trip Hedrick was pleased with the performance. “We knew coming into today that it would be a tough meet. We raced well, and needed to win the close races. I was pleased with the way Johann Andersson stepped up today.”

Husker swimmer Adam Pine set a Beyer Pool record, winning the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 48.73. The previous record was held by Iowa’s Rafal Szukala with his 1994 time of 48.79. The Cyclone women faced a team in which recently added four Olympians to the team at the semester.

“Nebraska is a talented team. They’re deep and they’re quality. They will challenge for the conference championship,” said Women’s Head Coach Ramsey Van Horn.

The Cyclones were lead by the winning performances of Christa Graper and diver Janine Paskiewicz.

Graper recorded her season-best time of 1:56.27 in the 200 meter freestyle, while Paskiewicz gained a regional berth with her one-meter diving score of 249.23.

Van Horn was happy to gain the experience from the meet, as it was the first competition for the team since its Dec. 14 competition at Iowa.

“It was sure fun having a meet after a long time off,” Van Horn said. The Cyclone men’s and women’s swimming teams will both be in action when they host North Dakota next Saturday at 1 p.m.
