Men do well at Minnesota Invite

The Cyclone men’s swim team put together a strong meet last weekend to finish second behind host school Minnesota in the Minnesota Invitational beating Utah, Wisconsin and Florida Atlantic.

The team was led by All-American Jay Schindler, who placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 56.41, and Joakim Dahl who finished second in the 100-meter butterfly posting a time of 49.56

Coach Hedrick was impressed by the team’s performance. “We really had some outstanding performances,” Hedrick said. “Our goal going in was to beat every team that wasn’t shaved.”

Some of the performances Hedrick was speaking of were the swims of Jay Schindler and Joakim Dahl.

Schindler’s time in the 100-meter breaststroke is the ninth fastest time in the nation this year. Dahl’s time in the 100-meter butterfly places him twelfth. Iowa State’s 200 medley and free relays are also ranked in the top twenty.

“We are feeling pretty good about how we are ranked right now for not having shaved or rested for any meet so far,” Hedrick said.

He continued saying Iowa State is currently ranked No. 27 in the country.

“The performances we are seeing are definitely the fastest unshaved times we’ve ever had since I can remember,” Hedrick said.

Iowa State gets ready to take on St. Olaf tonight in Ames. Hedrick said the team is not going to train any differently for this meet. “They’re a pretty good Division III team,” Hedrick said. “They’re a consistent top five Division III team.”

Hedrick said the team is going to use this meet to showcase the team’s freshmen. “We’re going to use it as a chance for some guys to get a break from their routine events,” Hedrick said.

The meet starts tonight at 6:00 p.m. in Beyer Hall.
