UDA wants to pump you up

Spot me, baby.
The Union Drive Association Weight Club is holding a bench press contest for all those willing to come out and pump iron to raise a few funds for the Ames Boys and Girls Club.
The competition will be held on Saturday beginning at 1:30 at Friley Hall in the Terrace Room.
This is an annual event for the Weight Club, but this is their first attempt at putting a worthy cause behind their workouts.
“We always have a bench press contest every year, but this is the first time we’ve done it for a charity,” said UDA Weight Club President Cathy Moberg, a junior in exercise science.
The group will raise money for the Boys and Girls Club through the $10 entry fee charged to participants as well as donations and pledges, she said.
All who enter will receive a t-shirt, but as an added push to get students to gather more pledges, all entries that give over $10 will be placed in a drawing.
Three names will be drawn from the pile to receive $20 gift certificates for the Sports Page, a sporting goods store at North Grand Mall, and the person with the most pledges earned will receive a $35 gift certificate to any store in Ames of his or her choice.
“It gives incentive to people to go out and get more than enough for the $10 entry fee,” Moberg said.
The weight club is hoping to raise at least $300 dollars from the fund raiser, she said.
As of now, around 10 people are signed up, but Moberg expects that when Saturday afternoon rolls around, at least 20 people should be enlisted and ready to go.
The event is open to anyone at ISU, but most participants will probably be found in the UDA, she said.
“Basically it’s just the regulars who lift down in the [Friley] weight room. Sometimes there’s a few from RCA and Towers,” Moberg said.
There will be eight weight classes for men, starting at 136 pounds, and a separate category for women, as typically only a handful of females participate, she said.
Preregistration is not required. So students can still get involved. Sign-in for the event starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
