Cato, Cyclones ready for trip to Carver-Hawkeye
December 12, 1996
A man able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, Kelvin Cato, sported four dunks in addition to leading the team with 21 points and 13 rebounds in his 16 minutes of play on the court in Wednesday night’s win against Drake .
At one point in the game, Cato missed a dunk, scurried to get the rebound, and then shot up again, grabbing the rim and forcing the ball through.
“Not a bad night at all,” Cato said, opening up a barrage of questions. “I just did what the coach wanted me to do. He told me I was going to be playing against smaller guys, and I was to try to shoot over the top of them, and that is all I have been practicing.”
His accomplishments garnered much attention from all on the court.
“Cato went up there and went real hard tonight,” Bankhead said. “He’s been working that turn around jump shot which was perfection tonight.”
According to Cato, his turn around jump shot has evolved with a lot of practice.
“Every day in practice, the coach yells at me and screams at me about facing towards the basket in my turn around jump, and try to shoot at the peak of my jump,” Cato said.
On leading the team in scoring against Drake, even Cato was amazed by his stats.
“I always get that feeling that when I shot, that it is going in,” Cato said. “Today, they were just falling. I couldn’t say nothing about it.
Cato made 10-of-17 from two-point range. Adding to the Cyclone win was Stevie Johnson with 12 points, going 5-of-9 with six rebounds. Shawn Bankhead had eight points on 4-of-7 shooting with five rebounds.
This weekend, the Cyclones face their toughest opponent yet this season. They take to the road for the first time this year to play in-state rival University of Iowa. Last year, the Hawkeyes came to Ames and managed to pull off a close win, 56-50.
The Cyclones find themselves in a familiar position as they were undefeated last year when they went against the heavily favored Hawkeyes.
“Fortunately, we have a few guys who have been [to Iowa] before,” Floyd said. “The concentration level needs to step up a little bit when you go out on the road.”
“It’s going to be a challenge for us out there,” Bankhead said. “As a team, we are going to go out there, work hard and beat them on the court.”
