Davis is again named a Heisman finalist
December 4, 1996
Troy Davis will be making an encore appearance as a Heisman Trophy finalist in New York City later this month.
Davis was told Tuesday by officials at the Downtown Athletic Club, the organization that sponsors the award, that he is again a finalist for college football’s top honor. Other Heisman finalists will likely be named soon.
“So far they’ve only named two, but it’s not a set thing,” said Tom Kroeschell, Iowa State’s sports information director. “It’s their decision how many they bring in.” Kroeschell didn’t know who the other finalist was.
Davis, a junior running back from Miami, was fifth among five Heisman finalists last year. Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, Texas Tech running back Byron Hanspard and Davis are considered the top contenders for this year’s award. Wuerffel is considered the favorite.
For the second consecutive year, Davis led the nation in rushing with 2,185 yards and a 198.6-yard average this year for the Cyclones. He is the only back in NCAA Division I history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season twice. Davis also led the nation in all-purpose yards with a 214.9-yard average.
Hanspard was second in rushing with 2,084 yards this season.
Davis ran for 2,010 yards last year, but lost the Heisman to Ohio State running back Eddie George.
The Heisman will be awarded Dec. 14 during an ESPN broadcast from the Downtown Athletic Club.
Davis, a bright spot for the 2-9 Cyclones this season, was also named a finalist Tuesday for the Maxwell Award, which also honors college football’s top player. The Maxwell is sponsored by the Maxwell Memorial Football Club of Philadelphia. That award presentation will be held in Orlando, Fla., and will also be televised by ESPN.
George won the Maxwell last year.
Earlier this week, Davis was beat out by Hanspard for the Doak Walker Award, given to college football’s top junior or senior running back. Northwestern’s Darnell Autry was also in the running for the Walker Award.
The award shows, coupled with a looming Finals Week and ISU’s football banquet on Dec. 13, will keep Davis busy next week.
Kroeschell said Davis will fly to Orlando on Dec. 11, fly back to Ames on the 13th for the banquet and then fly to New York with Coach Dan McCarney on Saturday, Dec. 14 for the Heisman show. Davis’ parents will also be flown by the Downtown Athletic Club to New York for the presentation.
Travel plans for Davis will be finalized today. “We’ll have to work around his finals,” Kroeschell said.
Kroeschell said Heisman officials dropped no clues Tuesday about Davis’ chances for the award. “It’s very hard to tell,” he said.
Neither Davis nor McCarney, who is on the road recruiting, could be reached as of press time Tuesday. Kroeschell said Davis and McCarney will comment on the Heisman selection during a news conference this afternoon.
