Forget TV, radio, your computer’s got the score

“Hey Joe, turn on the computer and check the score!”

Yes, technology has made it possible for people to link up to the Internet and check near-up-to-date scores for Iowa State athletic events.

ISU fans can catch Cyclone athletics online for the next couple of weeks. A new camera, a combination of a World Wide Web camera and a video camera, has been loaned to Iowa State for a trial period to see if there is an interest in Cyclone sports on the World Wide Web. If the interest is large enough, Iowa State Center officials will consider purchasing the camera.

Mike Broich, associate technical director of the Iowa State Center, said, “This is something I have wanted to do for a couple years. “

The camera is on loan for a 30-day test period.

The $1,300 camera costs about half as much as it would cost to get the Hilton Coliseum scoreboard on the Web by using a computer setup.

Broich said before sporting events, he simply starts up the camera so it will begin to take pictures.

The camera takes pictures of the scoreboard every 10 seconds and updates the Web site during all athletic events at Hilton Coliseum.

The camera has been broadcasting athletic events on the Web since Nov. 12 and will continue on a trial basis for a couple more weeks.

Technology also allows people to tune into their favorite Iowa State sporting events via the World Wide Web.

Audionet, an internet service in Texas, broadcasts athletic events, concerts, business conferences and other events over the Internet.

Iowa State is one of 11 Big 12 universities that has its men’s basketball games on the Web. The service is free to listeners.

To get to the site, follow the appropriate links from http://www.center.iastate.edu and view the Hilton Coliseum scoreboard.

If you have comments about the camera and the service provided, send them to Mike Broich at [email protected]
