Time to revue seasons
December 10, 1996
Studying got you down? Does work (combined with school) have you wishing that winter break would hurry up and get here?
“‘Tis the Season!: A Celebration of the Seasons in Song.” is the perfect break from whatever is stressing you out.
“‘Tis the Season” is a not a play or concert, but a “musical revue,” said Marge Bennett Folger, an assistant professor of music who is directing and choreographing the event.
“It’s a sequence of songs with narration in between them,” she explained.
“The narration is there to help keep the flow going, but unlike a musical, which has scenes and so on, it’s not a story.
“Students sing the songs, and characters emerge through the songs. It’s them making the words come alive, which is kind of what a musical revue is like: stringing songs together that have a common meaning,” Folger said.
The theme of the revue is the seasons, which Folger said are common subjects for musical numbers.
While the revue is not a musical, it will feature almost two dozen songs that once appeared in musicals, from “South Pacific,” to “Camelot,” to “Hello Dolly.”
“All of the songs are taken directly from musicals,” Folger said. “There are a lotta classics, a lotta standards. People will probably recognize the tunes when they hear them.”
And even though we’re in the middle of December, not all of the songs celebrate winter and Christmas, Folger said. Though there are a few holiday songs, most of them focus on the other three seasons.
The setting for this revue is the Celebrity Cafe, which is located on the lower level of C.Y. Stephens Auditorium.
Folger said that as far as she knew, no one has used this space for a production of any kind. It is usually the site for pre-show discussions at Stephens.
“It’s an intimate, sort of cabaret-style feeling,” Folger said. “It’s always nice to have a new space to use.”
Folger encourages people to put their books away, turn off the computer and head to Stephens for an hour’s worth of music.
A mere 60 minutes, she said, will not interfere with anyone’s evening plans, and the music will take everyone’s mind off of finals pressure.
“It’s a place people can come to right after work or to take a little study break,” she said. “It’s a laid-back break from the holidays and end-of-the-semester stress.”
“‘Tis the Season: A Celebration of the Seasons in Song” starts at 5:30 p.m. tonight; it will also run tomorrow evening at the same time.
It is in the Celebrity Cafe of C.Y. Stephens Auditorium, and admission is $2 at the door.
Coffee and refreshments will be available.
