Davis leads ISU football honorees
ISU tailback Troy Davis brought home three awards from the 1996 Cyclone Football Banquet Friday night, including ISU’s Most Valuable Football Player.
On the evening before the Heisman Trophy presentation, Davis also earned the Ray Scott Award, which is awarded to the outstanding offensive player, and the Reuben J. Miller Award, which is given to a player who has brought honor to ISU.
Earlier that night, Davis was presented with the 1996 AT&T Long Distance Award for the most rushing yards in Division I-A competition.
Punter Marc Harris earned two awards that evening.
He was the recipient of the Jim Doran Award for special teams and the Appreciation Award for being considerate to the support staff.
Linebacker Derrik Clark won the Al & Dean Knudson Award for the outstanding defensive player, Tim Kohn and Pat Augufa won the Arthur Floyd Scott Awards for lineman, and Tyrone Watley received the Durwood “Drury” Moss Award for outstanding newcomers.
Cyclones tune up at Holiday Classic
The Iowa State men’s track team won six events at the ISU Holiday Classic on Friday.
Senior Tim Wilson made history at the meet by breaking the event’s shot put record with a throw of 57 feet 0.25 inches.
ISU dominated the 60 meter dash by sweeping the top three places. Franklin Nwankpa won the event with a time of 6.67.
Sophomores Marcus Clark and Damon Lampley tied in the high jump event with a jump of 6 feet 10.25 inches.
The Cyclones return to action Jan. 18 when they host the Iowa State Open.
Men, women fall to Iowa swimmers
The Iowa State swimming and diving teams fell victim to the Iowa Hawkeyes over the weekend.
The men were defeated by the score of 162.5-135.5, while the women fell by the score of 193-107.
Both teams will host competition on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Beyer Pool.
