Planning for a merry Christmas
November 7, 1996
Christmas is coming and with it comes the second annual Story County fund-raiser in which ornaments are sold. This year the ornaments being sold feature the Iowa State University Campanile.
Charene Starcevic, executive director of the Volunteer Center of Story County said, “We decided to put the Campanile on the ornament because it is something unique to Story County and it is well-known.” Lynne Carey, chairperson of the fund-raising committee for the Volunteer Center Board said that the Campanile is what will get people to buy these ornaments.
“The Campanile is something that people feel good about. Plus the price is relatively low,” said Carey.
Last year a picture of the Dinky Rail Road, which used to run from downtown Ames to ISU campus, was featured.
The committee was “pleased with how the fund-raiser did last year,” Starcevic said. “There are still a few left from last year if someone would want to buy one. That way they can have the whole set.”
The ornaments are being sold now through December, Starcevic said.
The limited edition ornaments are being sold for $8 at the Volunteer Center, North Grand Mall, American Country, Gift Vine, Madeline’s, Big Table Books, Campus Book Store, Sugar Tree, University Bookstore and other businesses in Story County.
“The main purpose of this organization is to recruit and refer volunteers to agencies and individuals in the county,” Starcevic said.
The money made in this fund- raiser will go to various programs such as the Story County Christmas Closet, YES (Youth Efforts in Service), Disaster Response Program and Adult Volunteer Management.
“The programs that will receive this money are really great,” Carey said.
The Story County Christmas Closet helps low-income families. YES gets youth involved in volunteering. Disaster Response Program makes sure that volunteers and resources are available in times of disaster. The Adult Volunteer Program helps agencies to find volunteers.
