Hickory Park relocating a few blocks north

The park is on the move — Hickory Park, that is, for those unfamiliar with the rustic establishment.

Known as one of Ames’ most well-known and popular restaurants, Hickory Park is in the process of relocating just blocks north of its current location.

Elizabeth Kopecky, supervisor at Hickory Park, said the restaurant has been at its current location since January of 1981.

“This is an opportunity to expand and become more efficient. We are running out of room here,” Kopecky said. “We are going to keep this location open until the opening day of the new place.”

Kopecky said the move will allow for more kitchen and dining room space.

Also, there is going to be a viewing area of the smoke-houses, so patrons will be able to see the operations of the meat smoke-house.

Kopecky said the extra space is to better handle the weekend crowd, the alumni and buses after the sports games.

Many students encourage the move, with the hope that the atmosphere of the restaurant remains unchanged.

“I think that the move is great, it is one of my favorite restaurants,” said Brian Terry, a junior in computer engineering. “I think that they provide the best food for the lowest prices.”

However, some prefer the original establishment for its history and charm.

“I would really hope that they don’t change the environment,” Terry said. “I think that everyone likes the fact that they are old fashioned.”

Kopecky said the public is a bit hesitant about the move, but the owner is working hard to preserve the charm and keep things the same.

“It would be nice because then you would not have to wait so long to get in,” said Jaclyn Barnard, a freshman in education. “The inside is really unique, and I hope that it stays the same.”

Kopecky said employees are excited about the move.

“We are thrilled to get to where we are at, and I think that this will make the business better,” Kopecky said. “We have just finished our 26th year in business.”

Kopecky said they hope to be moved into the new location by the first of February.
