Craft show offers world of goods
November 7, 1996
The wonders of the world are on display now during the International Craft Show in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union.
The craft show is sponsored by Worldly Goods, 410 Main St., a non-profit organization. Worldly Goods offers ethnic-inspired hand crafts produced in 40 countries around the world.
JoAnn Huss, shop manager of Worldly Goods, said, “We offer unique products from culturally rich parts of the world.”
The hours of the craft show will be 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. through the end of the week. The sale will also open to the public on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. before the International Week’s Global Food Fest in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.
These products are made of natural materials that originate in their native countries.
Such products as wood, onyx and soapstone carvings, wall hangings, jewelry, musical instruments, games, holiday decorations and baskets will be displayed at the event. Some products are autographed by the original artisan.
Huss said the crafts make good holiday presents and used the saying “Gifts that give twice” to let people know their presents are also helping people in need.
Worldly Goods is a volunteer organization that has been in the Ames area for nine years. This volunteer basis helps to keep prices down, Huss said.
She feels volunteering “fits for my life mission to help people with limited opportunities.”
All the proceeds from the craft sale are given back to the artisans with the exception of shipping costs.
The purpose of the International Handcraft Sale is to help artisans use their talents to earn money for food, housing, education and opportunity.
Last year, Worldly Goods raised $5,500. They would like to top that this year.
Every $1,100 in sales equals a year of income in the impoverished countries.
