Do you have what it takes to run one of ISU’s colleges?

Iowa State students who dream of becoming a college dean have a shot at glory next week.

The annual Dean For a Day program, sponsored by the Senior Class Council, is back again this year. The Dean for a Day program was created to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

To participate, students purchase raffle tickets sold by SCC members and the Student Alumni Association. If they win, they spend a day with their college dean.

The program “benefits both charity and students to get a more in-depth education,” said Pam Hruby, SCC’s engineering college representative.

The deans and winning students switch places for the day. The students perform some of simpler tasks the deans do each day, and the deans attend the students’ classes.

Brad Feuerhelm, SCC member, said the program helps students “see what the Deans do and gets the Deans in the classroom.”

Elizabeth Hoffman, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, said the Dean for a Day program is, “a wonderful experience for students to see the other side of the university, and it’s fun to get to know a student as one of us.”

Hoffman said one student a few years ago had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. The Dean for a Day program helped him decide he wanted to do something in the education.

Benjamin Allen, dean of the College of Business, said the program exposed him to real issues concerning students. He would like this year to be more personal. In past years, he was separated from the students in his activities. This year he would like to go to lunch with students and discuss experiences.

Dean for a Day starts with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union. A speaker from the American Cancer Society will be present. The deans and the students will meet and discuss plans for the day.

The raffle tickets may be purchased in Room 158 of the Memorial Union. The tickets are $1 and may be purchased Friday, Nov. 8. Proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
