ISU Activists want to be official

The ISU Activists will register as a formal organization by the end of the month and apply for Government of the Student Body funding as early as next fall, a group leader said.

The Activists need to elect a cabinet and find an adviser before becoming official. “We have other faculty that are interested, so it won’t be a problem,” Activists Director John Scriver said in Richard Haws’ journalism class last week.

The ISU Activists are a group that facilitates communication between various progressive organizations on campus through electronic mail, letter distribution and word-of-mouth. In addition, the group helps other groups organize demonstrations.

Scriver said many students and faculty, including GSB President Adam Gold and Vice President for Business and Finance Warren Madden, like the idea of better communication.

“We don’t take a certain stance on issues,” Scriver said. “We are just a communicative structure. The Activists don’t want to portray the image that we are a nemesis. We are on good terms with other groups on campus.

Scriver, a graduate student in sociology, said the Activists have a political agenda, but don’t support a certain political party. “We do have a strong political philosophy with more group members on the progressive side.”

The ISU Activists was formed late this summer when Scriver and September 29th Movement leader Milton McGriff joined forces. The group organized an open forum and a rally to oppose the McHub and began posting flyers.

“We are naming buildings because of contributions,” he said. “We are considering putting up a McDonald’s 50 meters from the Food Science Building. What are we trying to say? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that we haven’t been doing things effectively.”

The ISU Activists began as an e-mail group.

“We do have a hard time communicating with the administration,” Scriver said. “People knew about Catt Hall after the name had already been decided.”

Scriver said money from GSB will be used to set up rallies and bring in international leaders. The Activists also hope to send their leaders to conventions on other campuses.

Although he believes the group may have as many as 300 members now, Scriver said the roster when the organization becomes formal will be somewhat exclusive.

“We don’t want groups opposing themselves,” Scriver said.

Catt forum scheduled

An open forum on the controversy surrounding the name of Catt Hall will be held Tuesday at noon in the Maintenance Shop of the Memorial Union.

The forum will feature Jane Cox, a professor of music and Catt supporter, a member of the September 29th Movement, the campus organization trying to change the name of Catt Hall, and a member of the Government of the Student Body.

This is the first in a series of weekly M-Shop forums sponsored by the Student Union Board.

Trice forum scheduled

A public forum to seek input on a proposal to rename Cyclone Stadium/Jack Trice Field to Jack Trice Stadium has been scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Horticulture Auditorium (Room 118) of Horticulture Hall. The forum is being hosted by the Advisory Committee for the Naming of Building and Streets.
