Cyclones endure sour exhibition against Pura Milk

It was a long night for the Iowa State men’s basketball team as the Adelaide 36ers Basketball Club of Australia, whose jerseys bore the words “Pura Milk,” lit up the scoreboard from three-point land to oust the Cyclones by a final of 86-66.

Adelaide had the hot hand, shooting 10 of 14 three-pointers in the Cyclone loss.

“I give credit to Adelaide. We played a team that shot the ball very well. I always said that if you can’t guard the three-point line then you don’t have a defense. And right now we don’t have one,” said ISU Head Basketball Coach Tim Floyd.

Adelaide also had a monster rebounding edge on the Cyclones. ISU could only manage 19 rebounds to Adelaide’s 40.

“The game is not very complicated. We got outrebounded by a much more aggressive team. Our aggressiveness was not there. We are a much more physical team than we showed tonight,” Floyd said.

Tuesday’s game also marked the return of Iowa State’s All-American senior guard Dedric Willoughby and Cyclone senior forward Shawn Bankhead.

Willoughby scored 19 points while collecting two assists and going without a rebound.

“Dedric played OK, not great. I thought his ball handling could have been better, and it will get there. I thought it was obvious that he has been out of a competitive situation for a while,” Floyd said.

Bankhead scored five points in his return in which he only played in the second half.

Floyd said there was no specific reason for Bankhead missing the first half of action.

“We just didn’t put him in. That’s all I can say. We just chose not to put him in,” Floyd said.

The bright spots for ISU were freshman center Paul Shirley and Stevie Johnson. Shirley collected 12 points while grabbing three rebounds. Johnson scored only six points while tallying a rebound, an assist and a steal.

“Paul Shirley played well tonight. He was the one guy on the floor who was aggressive. He takes care of the basketball and will at least try to guard you. I also thought Stevie Johnson played his best game thus far,” Floyd said.

Adelaide took advantage of the Cyclones’ defensive scheme which was allowing three-point attempts all game long. Floyd, seeing how his defense was struggling, neglected to switch defenses in attempt to make the Cyclones aware of where they are defensively.

“I guess the obvious question is why didn’t I switch defenses? I wanted to expose them to just how bad their defense is. I was very disappointed in our defense tonight,” Floyd said.

Willoughby was in total agreement with Floyd.

“We didn’t defend the ball at all. This team showed us that we have a lot to work on. We didn’t rebound. I’m not pleased at all. I let my man get wide all not long. It’s a long road to get back to where we were,” Willoughby said.

The road may be shortened when ISU senior center Kelvin Cato returns to the lineup in two games.

“Cato will help, but we have to play with what we have. We didn’t get it done,” said Willoughby.

The Cyclones will open the regular season on Tuesday, November 26 as Alcorn State will make the trip to Ames.

“I imagine that Alcorn State will be a formidable opponent,” Floyd said.
