Furharvesters set plan in motion

Members of the ISU Furharvesters Club are planning to use a memorial gift they received to help sponsor an animal damage-control workshop.

The workshop, which is scheduled for February, will help people who have problems with wildlife mixing with urban settings.

Jeff O’Tool, president of the Furharvesters Club, said the club received $200 in memory of Otto Francis Moore. The club meets regularly to discuss trapping and hunting techniques,

O’Tool, a junior in animal science, said Moore worked with the Iowa State Farm Service from 1955-1984. He died last June.

Jamie Beyer, a 1976 graduate of ISU who has helped advise the club since its start 10 years ago, said the memorial was given to them because Moore supported the club and its activities.

“He was a big supporter of hunting and trapping,” Beyer said, who is also a director for the Iowa Trappers Association.

Beyer said the club appreciates the memorial, and they think the workshop will be a good way to spend the money.

O’Tool said the workshop would give people having problems with wildlife a chance to meet with experts and learn solutions to their problems.

Beyer said people who have problems with animals such as deer or groundhogs will be able to learn various alternatives to hunting to solve their problem.

“Each situation requires a different technique,” he said.

The club will be meeting with the Story County Conservation Board and the Department of Natural Resources and, Beyer said, the club hopes to set up the workshop for sometime in February.

“I would like to see it be state-wide,” he said.

He said there is a need for this kind of workshop, because as the population continues to move out farther into the country there will continue to be problems with wildlife.

“We want the wildlife to be there, but in moderation,” Beyer said.
