Volleyball team falls
November 12, 1996
The Iowa State volleyball team went on a westward road trip in search of a win, with stops in Colorado and Nebraska, but came home empty-handed.
“I feel we played very well against Nebraska,” said ISU Assistant Coach Stephanie Francis. “We went in wanting the victory, but they are just a better team at this point.
“I think that we could have beaten [Colorado],” Francis said, “but we didn’t play together collectively as a team. We need to have six people playing their best all at once to be competitive in the conference at this point.”
“We are just looking forward to the next few matches for some wins,” Francis said.
On Friday night, the Cyclones played the Colorado Buffaloes, losing in a three game match, 15-9, 15-9, 15-1.
Leading the ‘Clones in kills was senior Sonya Van Helden with 19. Senior Rachelle Van Scoyoc was back on the floor after an injury kept her out of last week’s matches, adding 11 kills. Sophomore Colleen Henican added nine kills and 10 digs, while Junior Heidi Rogers lead the team in digs with 13. Senior Jen Lansink had 48 assists throughout the match.
Colorado had three players in the double digits in kills — Melissa Schutz and Sarah Ladge each with 13, and Rachel Wacholder adding 12. Kelly Campbell helped the team with her 46 assists.
Iowa State had a .184 hitting percentage to Colorado’s .372.
Saturday night, the ‘Clones played their tougher opponent of the weekend, Nebraska, ranked seventh nationally. The ‘Clones fell in a three game match, 15-5, 15-5, 15-3.
Iowa State got into trouble with errors against the Huskers, with the team posting a .031 hitting percentage to Nebraska’s .305.
The Huskers dominated throughout the match, almost doubling the ‘Clones in kills, 45 to 24, and in digs, 43 to 27.
The Cyclones take on Texas Tech and Baylor this weekend.
Iowa State lost to Texas Tech earlier this season in a three-game match, and went down to the wire against Baylor, losing in a five game match.
The Cyclones will play both matches at home, starting with Texas Tech at the Hilton on Friday, and Baylor at the Physical Education Building. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
