Daily columnists a drag

Andy Gonzales

How many read the article by April Samp entitled, “A few thoughts about Halloween?” Now what merited this article to be in the Daily?

The article was a reflection of April’s past Halloweens. The space in the Daily could have been used for something more newsworthy.

When I envision a newspaper I see coordinated efforts by a group of reporters whose sole mission is to bring news not known by the general public to them.

All this paper seems to do is drag us into the minds of the writers. We don’t want to hear what happened to you seven years ago. If we want to hear about your life story, we’ll ask. The heart of the newspaper is its opinion section. But all I seem to see is a bunch of twisted, nonsense opinions.

Let’s get something in there that is newsworthy. For example, how many of you eat Pringle’s Potato chips? Does it have Olestra in it? Do you even know what Olestra is and what it can do to you? This could be a possible topic, possibly not.

My point is that many of you who write for the Daily need to do a real journalist’s job. Please improve your writing skills. Many of you are deficient and need better fact checkers. If you have any at all.

The Daily could be a good newspaper. All you have to do is find real subjects that truly represent the interests of ISU students.

The first step is to ask them, “What interests you?” and for goodness sakes, spell their names right.

That’s the first rule of being a journalist.
