Help ‘Peace It Together’ today near Campanile

A rally sponsored by the Inter-Residence Hall Association called “Peace It Together” will be held today at noon near the Campanile.

Rob Weise, IRHA president, said the rally is to help unite the Iowa State community after recent tension on campus from the Deantrious Mitchell incident, the Catt Hall controversy, the incident resulting from a story written by Tracy Call in the Iowa State Daily on a lesbian couple and various other campus incidents.

“We all need to work together to unify, including the staff and administration,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of issues between the students and the administration, but maybe if we can work together — get some real dialogue — we can get somewhere.”

The rally will feature several speakers from various campus student organizations, such as the IRHA, Black Student Alliance, Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Ally Alliance, the three major greek associations, Student Alumni Association and possibly GSB, Weise said.

“We came up with the idea three weeks ago because of the Mitchell incident, but now we’re still going ahead with it,” he said. “It’s important people realize they need to work together. Hopefully, this gets that spirit going. One of our biggest problems on campus is that we fight each other instead working together.”

Buttons will be given to those in attendance, he said.
