Keep the campus neat and help out the smokers

Osamu Kobayashi

I am a smoker, and as I walk around I see that there are still some nicotine addicts among ISU students, in spite of the no-smoking boom in America.

At ISU smoking is prohibited in the buildings and therefore, we can smoke only outside where ashtrays are placed.

I like to take a break around the Hub, which has several vending machines. [Other students probably] have the same idea as I do.

Around the Hub, there are many spaces to sit, and it is a very convenient place for smokers and other students to relax between classes.

Sooner or later, most smokers realize that they cannot find any ashtrays around the Hub, and some smokers throw their filters away on the lawn.

How many smokers notice the only ashtray located by the west entrance of the Hub?

I’m not sure how many smokers there are at ISU.

However, there are some smoking students, and it is quite natural for smokers to observe the smoking etiquette, no matter if the weather is rainy or windy.

I am not asking for a lot of concessions for smokers. I would just like an increase in the number of ashtrays in such places as by the benches at the Hub.

It will contribute to the campus being kept more beautiful.

Even I, one of the smokers, don’t want an ugly campus, and probably other smokers agree with my opinion.

I suggest that more smoking spaces be provided on the ISU campus.

If the number of ashtrays is increased in campus, many smokers will be freed from the annoyance of a lack of a smoking place.

In addition, the campus will be more beautiful and fewer cigarette filters will litter the lawns.
