Two trains crush car on Duff

An Ames woman’s car was crushed between two trains on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in the downtown area of Ames early Sunday morning.

Police reports said a westbound Union Pacific Railroad train hit the unoccupied car at the Duff Avenue crossing.

Jessica Cook of Ames told Ames police officers that a tire on her 1993 Ford Escort went flat near the railroad crossing on Duff Avenue around 2 a.m.

Cook’s car then got stuck between the rails. She got out of the car and ran from it when she saw an oncoming westbound train.

The train struck the car and pushed it several hundred feet to the west. Shortly after, an oncoming eastbound train stuck another part of the car, crushing it between the two trains.

Cook, whose vehicle was destroyed in the accident, was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time and was not injured.

No charges had been filed as of press time Monday. There is an investigation underway by the Ames Police Department and the Union Pacific Railroad.
