Free flu shots for faculty and staff
October 14, 1996
Prevention is the key to staying on top of the flu season.
Eligible faculty and staff can now get their doses in the form of a free flu shot now through Nov. 8.
Karen Burk, occupational health registered nurse, said this flu shot procedure is new for Occupational Medicine.
“This is the first time we’re doing it, at least in the scope of how many people coming through and that we’re offering it for this period of time.”
Monday was the first day the flu shots were available and Burk said approximately 200 faculty and staff have already received shots.
Burk said she expects a real tough flu strain this year. “It will probably be here about the end of December and will be going full-force up until the middle of February,” Burk said.
Burk said the influenza vaccine is strongly recommended for those 65 years old or older. “As you get older, you have more of a tendency to get ill because the body’s immune system tends to slow down.
“Those planning on getting the shot are advised to wear a short sleeved shirt and may feel feverish or achy for a day or so afterward.
Protection will start one to two weeks after administration and will last four to six months from the time the shot was given.
Occupational medicine will offer the shots from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays now through Nov. 8 in Room 205 of Technical and Administrative Services Facility located between Spedding and Gilman.
