Coe plans on making an impact

David Coe is the Republican candidate running this fall for the open position on the Story County Board of Supervisors. Coe has several issues on which he feels he could have an impact if elected.

One major issue Coe would like to address is the spacing in Story County Courthouse which is located in Nevada.

“There is a safety problem here [Story County Courthouse],” Coe said. He said a possible solution is to remodel the present courthouse. Another option is to move the courthouse. Coe said the Nevada Economic Diversity could donate five acres of land for the new site.

“I haven’t had time to study the issue, so I can’t take a side. But if made a supervisor, I would look into it,” he said.

Another issue Coe said was important to Story county residents is the large hog lots issue. Coe said he has strong feeling concerning environmental issues pertaining to the county and the hog lots are part of his concern.

“We have no control over it until the county is given control by the legislature,” Coe said. Coe hopes the legislature will tighten up the guidelines and regulations concerning hog lots.

Coe said he would like to see the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) receive more funding and control over assessing possible sites for lots. He also hopes the DNR will become more strict concerning its guidelines. Coe said, for example, there should not be lots near rivers or residential areas.

“Usually the houses or the churches were there before the hog lots came. Those people chose to live in rural areas,” Coe said.

Even without control over the hog lot issue, the Story County Board of Supervisors does have some power, he said.

The board has the power to determine if a large hog lot will be located in the county, Coe said. The board has the last say in the manner even if the DNR approves of several suitable sites in the county. Coe added that the board can still say no.

Another issue of importance, Coe said is the increase of housing taxes in Story county. Coe said the supervisors have no control over the taxes, but advises people to look at what the school district and county budgets look like. Their budgets, Coe said, determine the amount of the taxes.

Coe said the responsibilities of a Story County Board Member is, “Just to make sure people get the best services for their tax dollars. Giving them good roads to drive on, good animal control and human services.”
