Discussion to be held at noon
October 1, 1996
The YWCA, in cooperation with the university, is holding a panel discussion today on, “Crossing Boundaries in Feminism” at noon in Room 244 of the Memorial Union.
Charlotte Bruner, professor emeritus of foreign language and third world studies, and Julie Minkler, temporary instructor of English, will serve as panel members for the discussion.
Judy Dolphin, executive director of YWCA, said the program was planned by student members of the YWCA and helps to further the mission of the organization which is to empower women and eliminate racism.
Past lectures have been received with varying interest; some events have drawn more than 60 people and other times as few as five people attended. Because the event is held during the lunch hour, those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.
Bruner, who is an expert in women’s needs as viewed through their literature, plans to talk about the varying needs of women in different cultures. She said she hopes to bring in some different views of feminism with an international perspective.
“This should be an interest to all,” she said. “I hope to illuminate some serious misconceptions about what feminism has accomplished. We have to realize that we are not always viewed as leaders.”
Bruner has directed a class for 14 years on third world cultures and has published two collections of short stories by African women.
