This Elvis is not the king in San Francisco

Monday night an already old debate was settled thanks to the Green Bay Packers. Yes, the Elvis Grbac vs. Steve Young debate is now officially as dead as Jeff Maier would be in Camden Yards.

Not that the debate ever truly existed. The fans of San Francisco, in their greatest moment of stupidity, thought that the offensive woes of their football team rested on the shoulders of Steve Young, and not the anemic running game.

However, Monday night, Elvis entered Lambeau Field and proved them wrong. Finally, Elvis had the chance to play a contender, rather than St. Louis or Atlanta, and failed miserably.

Steve Young had to be smiling inside. In the second half, Elvis couldn’t get the job done. The closest the 49ers came to scoring a touchdown was when Marquez Pope returned an interception to the 12-yard line.

Young seems to be taking this very well, considering so many people believe there is now a quarterback controversy in San Fran.

Perhaps he is eased by the fact that George Seifert has as much confidence in Elvis, as anyone has in either presidential candidate. With an opportunity to score late in the game after an interception brought the Niners to the 12-yard line, Elvis never had the chance to attempt a pass.

None of the 49ers seemed upset after the game that Young was never brought in with the game still on the line, despite the fact that Elvis was for the most part, ineffective.

Sometimes, it seems that the 49ers can’t wait to get rid of Young and his ego, and welcome Elvis’ huge ego into the fold, but in big games the apprehension toward the backup’s talent is very obvious.

So, in essence the 49ers are creating the same situation they started so many years ago with Young and Joe Montana.

On the same note, in a different town is the story of Jeff George and the Atlanta Falcons. Once again, fans rallied behind an inferior backup, and the coach took out the starter to appease the fans.

However George wasn’t injured, and his numbers were not bad. He had some choice words for the coach, and he was on the trading block quicker than it takes Tyson to knock out his next “challenge.”

Now George is the newest sports Roberto Alomar, and it is impossible for anyone to say anything good about his personality.

I have never liked George or his antics, but rumor has it the Falcons intend on dropping George by the possible deadline, and will start Hebert for the rest of the season.

Hebert? He used to play with Bob Dole when they were kids. This is no youth movement, just a lose movement.

The fans of Hotlanta deserve more, as now there is no way the Falcons can repeat last year and go to the playoffs.

Unfortunately, unless the Falcons swallow some pride and welcome back George, they won’t even have a .500 record.

George has even blocked a trade suggesting it wasn’t right for him, and apologized to coach June Jones. Maybe George wants to stay with the Falcons?

Well he at least deserves a second chance, just like the Falcons’ playoff chances.
