New goal post strategy
September 30, 1996
There are some things in life that just make you say hmm. Like Troy Davis proving that he is the the undisputed king of the turf by ripping Missouri for 378 yards. Like Iowa State driving the length of the field and turning a potential 21-10 deficit into a 17-14 lead. Like Metallica selling out. Like a buffalo wearing boxer shorts stampeding through a large bowl of chocolate pudding. Like a herd of llamas jumping rope to the sounds of Midnight Oil.
What do all of these things have in common? You never thought they would happen. Well, Davis did run for that many yards. ISU did conquer a first half scare to go up at halftime. Metallica did sell out (this one hurts the most). And as for the buffalo and the llamas…that is still yet to come.
So how is Iowa State achieving these feats? I think it has a lot to do with the installation of football pride. The Cyclones are supposed to be winners, and they are acting like it.
After the Cyclones dropped games to Wyoming and Iowa, the ‘Clones have bounced back like champs.
Before we give all the credit to the players, let’s talk a little about the crowd. I’m not sure, but I think a little of the Hilton magic made its way across the parking lot and seeped onto Jack Trice field.
So I’ll give a little piece of advice. Get drunker, scream louder and be crazier.
As for those who tried to take the goal post down after the game, I commend you in the highest way. The Wolfpack, baby. That’s what I’m talking about.
As I watched your efforts from high above in the press box to bring the post down, I noticed some flaws in your plan, and I’m here to correct them.
Think about this for a second. Why are the student sections so separated? It was based on a simple “united you stand, divided you fall.” But if the sections were to join after the game? United the students would be and the goal posts are doomed. Complete and utter destruction of the uprights. So join sections and it’s all yours. Remember that a few people need to take the bite so the rest can charge the post. 50 handcuffs can only shackle 50 people.
This is also a time for me to voice my disapproval with the athletic department’s handling on the “post- game goal post activity,” and I don’t take get any joy out of saying this. Why are there so many cops? Troy Davis made national history and ISU has it’s first two-game win streak in years. So why is the fuzz trying to stop the students from enjoying the history?
For years everyone asked for support from the students. So what is with this limited support? Come and yell for the ‘Clones, and when you’re done, take your ass home? Is this the way it is supposed to be? Tearing down the goal post is just as traditional to college football as the pigskin is. There are no set guidelines for when goal posts can or cannot be torn down, and I think last Saturday was a day for the uprights to fall. But hey, we got Texas A & M in two weeks.
We’ll talk later.
