Look toward retirement tonight

Those faculty and staff who have retirement in their sights may want to attend a special retirement planning seminar this evening before leaving Iowa State behind.
The seminar, which is called “Retirement Planning – Part II: TIAA-CREF Income Options for Employees Retiring Within a Decade,” will feature Teachers Insurance Annuity Associations’s Tom Koob from TIAA-CREF, which is a college retirement equities fund company in Chicago.
“He will do a wonderful presentation. He has been the university’s official liaison for many years,” said Ann Molison, retirement specialist with Iowa State’s Retirement Information and Planning office. Molison, who coordinates the event, said this seminar will be Koob’s last trip to Iowa State.
“He’s taking on more responsibilities with TIAA-CREF and will be passing on the baton to Toni Block who is also from Chicago.”
Koob, who is assistant vice president of TIAA-CREF, said the seminar has not been targeted just for faculty members but for every employee who participates in TIAA-CREF.
“It will entail a review of their investment accounts, their goal objectives and performance and will also review the benefit distribution options available to people once they terminate employment,” Koob said.
“There are probably 5,000 possible ways of determining how one receives income in retirement, and he is going to try to narrow that 5,000 ways down to 10 major categories,” Molison said.
She anticipates about 125-150 faculty and staff members will attend. “Some of them will be retiring during the next 9-12 month period of time. Others are wanting to learn more about the retirement income restrictions so they can plan their retirement contributions effectively,” Molison said.
“This seminar is very appropriate for people getting close to retirement wanting to know what those retirement options are. It is also for people who are doing five-to-ten year planning and want to get a sense of what their options are. If they understand their options, they may want to do a switching of gears on how they allocate their funds,” Molison said.

The Retirement Seminar will be held tonight at 7 in the Benton Auditorium of the Scheman Building.
