ISU axes Stormin’ Norman

Stormin’ Norman won’t be living alongside the Norman Nights. Not officially, at least.

Norman House’s new design to represent the Helser Hall residents has been rejected by ISU’s Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer.

The logo, designed by Cory Lubbert, a sophomore in management and information systems, was rejected when it ran into difficulties surrounding trademark infringement rules.

Lubbert’s logo, which he designed last year, is similar to ISU’s own new Cy logo. The only major difference in design between Cy and Stormin’ Norman is that ol’ Norm is clad in armor and carries a hefty broadsword.

It appears as though the similarity between Norm and Cy was too close for comfort for the university, and Norm’s armor-clad look will have to be shelved.

According to copyright laws the university has on Cy, the use of Norm, which is basically is an altered image of Cy, was prohibited.

That’s understandable.

After all, one of the major reasons for revamping ISU’s Cy was to give the university a singular logo that would be immediately identified with the school in a fashion similar to Florida State’s Seminole, the spry and ornery Fightin’ Irish of Notre Dame, and even, forgive, Herky the Hawk.

With alterations in that image, there is the possibility that the recognizability and the consistency of Cy could be lost.

So the university’s policy is sound, but only when enforced consistently. Maybe this means no more Jim Waldens endorsing Hooters by using the Iowa State name.

As long as this policy stays consistent, it’s valid. But it’s just a shame the students over at Norman House couldn’t use ‘ol Norm. He looked pretty cool.
