October 30, 1996
Two Ames men were arrested early Tuesday morning in connection with several car burglaries that took place throughout the evening at various locations both on and off campus.
According to police reports, James William Bates, 18, of 1318 Wisconsin Circle, and Nathaniel Lee McKern, also 18, of 814 8th St., have been taken into custody.
The two men were charged with third-degree burglary and later released from the Ames Police Department.
Ames police were given a description of the two men by Iowa State Department of Public Safety officials. Police then made a routine traffic stop and arrested the men.
Jerry Stewart, assistant director of DPS, said various items were recovered from the men, including stereo and other car equipment and a compound hunting bow.
Neither man is believed to be an Iowa State student.
No actual dollar amount on the stolen items was available as of press time Tuesday. Stewart said there was more than one victim and officials are trying to contact all parties involved.
Based on eye-witness accounts, two areas on campus where the burglaries took place were the stadium parking lot and Residence Hall Lot 63 in the Maple-Willow-Larch area.
