For fans of classical music, the Ames International Orchestra Festival Guild will present “An Evening of Dining and Music” featuring the Ames Piano Quartet in the Iowa State University Music Building on Saturday, Oct. 5th.

The evening will kick off with a social hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by a prime rib dinner at 7 p.m. Before the dinner a student string quartet will perform.

“During the dinner Ken Jolls, an ISU faculty member, will perform on the vibraphone,” Robert Maxham Executive Director of the AIOFA said.

Jolls added that he will perform some “light jazz.” Besides the vibraphone, other musicians will be playing trumpet, bass and drums.

The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. as the Ames Piano Quartet will perform works by well known composers Taneyev and Brahms. Works from Taneyev will include a quartet in E major, Opus 20.

“Taneyev was a great link among Russian composers including Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff,” says Maxham.

The Ames Piano Quartet will also be restricting some of Taneyev’s works which are noted for being very romantic and accessible.

As for Brahms, a quartet in G Minor, Opus 25 will be performed. “It was a war-horse of the piano quartet repertoire,” Maxham said. “It was one of Brahms’ favorite works.

The conclusion of the concert will feature a gypsy finale guaranteed to “get people out of their seats” Maxham said.

Aside from the live performances, piano lovers can hear the Ames Piano Quartet on recording. They have recorded Brahm’s quartet in G Minor for the Dorian label Maxham said.

Tickets to the dinner and concert are $40 per person. Tickets are also available for just the concert at $25 each. Tickets are available through the AIOFA Office.

Reservations can be nade by calling the AIOFA at 294-3213. There will be no walk-ins for the dinner.

A student rush line will begin 10 minutes before the concert, and tickets will cost $10 per person. For more information contact Maxham at 294-3213.
