You’ve got the power… to vote
October 22, 1996
Students are registering to vote in large numbers this month.
They know that the election is about their education, their current and future jobs, the economy and taxes, Social Security and crime.
A concerned voter looks for information that goes beyond the media images, sound bites and poll results. The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization, provides opportunities to learn how candidates stand on various issues.
The League’s Internet homepage carries a nonpartisan Voter’s Guide. Candidates for state and national offices were invited to submit a short statement describing the three issues they would address of elected. Access that information at http://lwvia.cornell-iowa. edu/.
The Ames League of Women Voters, along with other groups has available a Voter Information Guide which includes information abut candidates’ positions and directions on how to vote.
The guides are available free of charge at ISU YWCA located in Alumni Hall and the Catt Center for Women and Politics in Catt Hall. The Ames League and the Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring three candidate forums which are a good way to learn more about candidates. They give short presentations and then dialogue with the audience and listeners on Public Access Channel 12.
The schedule for candidate forums is:
Oct. 28 7-9 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers: Congressional candidates
Oct. 29 7-9 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers: County candidates for Supervisor, Auditor and Sheriff
Oct. 31 7-9 p.m., City Hall Council Chambers: Iowa Senate and House of Representatives candidates
If you have never voted or haven’t voted for years, now is the time to do something about it. You’ve got the power, use it.
