Why get offended?
October 20, 1996
We are writing in response to Todd Turner’s letter of Wednesday, Oct. 9.
In it, he likens homosexuality to pedophilia in the sense (we gather) that they are both sins in the eyes of his god. We would like to point out that while something may be against YOUR religion, that does not make it universally wrong, NOR should it be outlawed (source:first amendment).
Also, we would like to add that a person who doesn’t know the difference between two consenting adults having intercourse and an adult taking advantage of a young child is probably a pretty dangerous person.
Mr. Turner, why do you take such offense by someone who is not hurting you in any way?
Furthermore, homosexuals ARE NOT granted the same rights as heterosexuals because they can never have the financial privileges granted them by marriage laws.
The right not to get beaten up and the right to not get fired from your job and the right to get married are NOT “extra” rights, they are human rights as inalienable as your right to spout your beliefs in this publication, should you so choose.
One last point we’d like to make is that homosexuals are just as much people as you are. They are less likely than many heterosexuals to make unwanted advances, and will back off the SECOND someone states any negative feelings for fear of getting beaten up.
Also, the most common perpetrators of pedophilia are straight males. Who should the public really fear then?
