Jischke confuses
October 30, 1996
I would like to make a comment concerning the article written by President Martin Jischke on Monday, Oct. 21.
I felt his comments were directed toward black students, and I consider them an insult. I felt this way because he seemed to be suggesting that black students are violent and may react in a violent way because of recent events. I don’t know how he could reach such a conclusion because all recent protest events have been peaceful.
He also mentioned that this university will not tolerate this kind of “vile behavior,” meaning the incident with the black student security officer. If he tolerated naming a building after a racist person, then what is he trying to say when he speaks of “vile behavior?” For me, that is another vile act of racism and should not be tolerated. I back up the September 29th Movement 100 percent, and I think they are taking a stand for all minorities.
I am just a freshman, and people will probably not take me seriously because of my educational status. But I am well educated, through personal experience, when it comes to issues of racism and discrimination.
