Does he deserve it?
October 22, 1996
And so it begins. The movement to oust GSB President Adam Gold is officially underway.
For weeks, months, the grumblings could be heard.
Accusations of Gold’s lack of respect for the student body, his alleged mishandling of controversial issues, the debate over the Terri Houston situation, the web page dedicated to Gold’s removal from office…
It’s almost surprising it took someone this long to draw up impeachment papers on possibly the most controversial GSB president of the decade.
So what travesty has Gold committed that has finally forced his opposition’s hand?
And what crime is Gold suspected of that he can no longer be tolerated by the student body?
He forgot to make a phone call. Huh?
According to Sen. Mike Pogge, LAS, who filed the impeachment papers, Gold faces the threat of impeachment because he did not follow GSB bylaws when choosing a new election commissioner.
“The Story County auditor and three faculty members were supposed to attend the meeting (for choosing an election commissioner),” Pogge said.
No faculty members were contacted or present at the meeting.
Gold’s tempestuous relationship was also cited as a reason for his impeachment. His other actions that have brought strong public opposition surely also factored into his impeachment.
So, we are left with this question:
Is Gold being impeached because of a relatively minor infraction of GSB bylaws, or because of other issues? Maybe that should be made clear so we know exactly why our president is being impeached.
Is it because of an alleged bylaw violation, or is the violation simply an excuse to oust a man who has made some students extremely unhappy?
Make no mistake, this bylaw infraction is just the excuse Gold’s opponents needed to give Gold the boot.
Does Gold deserve to be removed from office? Hard to say.
But the man deserves to be confronted with the real reason he’s being impeached, and you can bet it has nothing to do with this alleged bylaw infraction that is being cited.
