Doin’ the time warp

The Rocky Horror Picture Show stirs many Iowa Staters into a frenzy this time of year with the much- anticipated viewing of Tim Curry as the transvestite Dr. Frankenfurter in the wacky, non-politically correct movie.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is being played and acted out at the Varsity Theater this Friday and Saturday at midnight, and everyone is encouraged to wear a costume and enjoy the movie, said Linda Fletcher, laboratory mechanical technologist for physics and astronomy.

Fletcher, a long-time Curry fan, said she has just about everything Curry has done. Her collection consists of costumes from a sitcom Curry was in that didn’t succeed, 26 movies (even though Curry is in 27 movies, one of them is not out yet), copies of almost all of the TV shows he has been in, pictures and posters from theater work Curry has done, soundtracks and about 300 electronic pictures, she said.

Her fascination with Curry began when she first saw him in the movie Legend and since then she has been following his work faithfully. “Unfortunately he doesn’t do too much more in his underwear,” Fletcher said.

The basic plot of the movie focuses on a couple who get a flat tire in a rain storm and then walk up to the nearest castle to use the phone. In the house there is a party, and a mad scientist — Curry’s Dr. Frankenfurter — is just about to reveal his latest creation. Although the mad scientist is a nice host, he doesn’t allow the couple to use the phone. Instead they are entertained by all of the crazy events that occur in the home.

“The movie is rude, lewd and crude. This is not exactly Bob Dole’s cup of tea,” Fletcher said.

A group of people, half from Ames and the other half from Des Moines, will be performing the almost ritual-like cult production of the movie in front of the big screen at the theater. Fletcher said she is dressing up as a Transylvanian.

A long tradition for the audiences of the movie is throwing toast and shouting out the lines as they are said. Although Varsity Theater does not allow people to bring in any props of their own, people are allowed to purchase a survival kit with supplies for the show for a small fee.

Jennifer Hoffman, a continuing freshman in pre-business, plans to dress as the Susan Sarandon character, Janet. Friday night’s showing will be Hoffman’s 59th viewing of the movie.

“It’s kinda like a high to look forward to it every single week and if it’s not there, it’s depressing,” Hoffman said.

The group of wannabe Rocky Horror actors will be performing and showing the movie on Nov. 2 at Billy Joe’s Picture Show at midnight in Des Moines.
