The brooms were out at the St. Louis Invitational as the ISU women’s tennis team captured the titles in all four singles’ brackets as well as the two doubles’ brackets over the weekend.

“We played 32 matches over the weekend and lost only one of those to a non-ISU opponent,” Coach Michele Conlon said. “I was very pleased with how they did.”

Erika Asmuss topped out the singles category, winning the No. 1 and 2 bracket over Lindsey Inversen of St. Louis University, 6-1, 6-1. Kristen Fagen defeated teammate Kendra Leese in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, to win the No. 3 and 4 singles bracket.

Angie Miller and Maggi Agustsson won the No. 5 and 6 bracket and No. 7 and 8 bracket, respectively, by the identical score of 6-0, 6-1.

Asmuss and Miller teamed up to capture the No. 1 and 2 bracket in doubles play, defeating teammates Fagen and Leese by the score of 8-1.

Mary Rumbaoa and Mollie Racette captured the No. 3 and 4 bracket in doubles.

“We only lost four sets to non-ISU opponents out of about 50 sets played,” Conlon said. “But more than that, I was mainly pleased with the way they played. They had confidence, they played with authority, and they carried themselves with a lot of class.”

The players gained the attention of others with their performance. “They presented themselves well on the court,” Conlon said. “The tournament director told me that I had some terrific people on this team.”

The tournament was a good experience for the team, Conlon said. “It’s good to play a tournament like this early in the year; that way we know what we need to work on,” she said.

The team will have plenty of time to work on making improvement, as their next meet is not until October 25, when they will participate in the Marquette Tournament in Milwaukee, Wisc.

“We will be facing some familiar competition, and it will be another good tournament to play in,” Conlon said.
